In January of 1680, 30 men, led by the
French explorer, Robert Cavalier crossed the Illinois River, rounded abandoned
in the river to the east side and came upon a thriving Indian village. The area
was a beautiful sight to those explorers, according to the history books, with
the magnificence of the river for navigation and the abundance of timber,
wildlife and game. This became Creve Coeur.
The early settlers had many hardships. They had to clear the timid build the
cabins are homes and plant crops, with no modern tools. Corn and other farm
crops were foreign to them, coming from Europe. They no experience in planting
them. They had to contend with natural disasters, also. In 1830, they suffered
through the deep snow and the survivors are known as snowbirds. It snow for over
three days and three nights and in some areas the drifts as high as 18 to 20
feet. The snow would not melt, as the weather was so cold and the sun was not
visible from many weeks. People were dependent upon quarter and hunting game the
but what they were unable to gather most of their crops. When they saw a corn
stock sticking out of the snow, they had to dig down to get the year. In 1836,
the sudden change occurred. The day before, a big snow was falling, followed by
a slow drizzling rain, changing the snow to ice and slush. The storm that
followed, changing temperatures so quickly, man and cattle were frozen in their
tracks. The ice had to be cut away or melted before they could walk. In 1828,
the first steam boat, that there was any account of, came up the Illinois River.
There been severe floods over the years, with the most severe being in 1927 in
1943. And other times, residents were forced to evacuate their homes. Residing
along the river, the floods were not surprising residents. Even though some were
stranded, for time, except by boat, they stayed and prospered.
As far as local organization there been many, very active organizations in Creve
Coeur. The Creve Coeur Volunteer Fire Department was started in 1938. Two more
of the oldest organizations in Creve Coeur are the Lions Club and the Woman's
Club. Both were started in 1944. The American Legion Post No. 1234 was organized
in 1954 and the Creve Coeur Community Council was organized in 1945.
The village has grown to welcome over 125 different businesses. The Creve Coeur
Business Association is very supportive community, providing a local sign, walk
a brochure, and spearheading a highway Christmas lighting project.
The history of the Creve Coeur library all started when Hattie Courtney was a
member of the East Peoria Woman's Club. They had their own library and Hattie
decided Creve Coeur need their own library. Hattie was the first president of a
newly formed Creve Coeur Woman's Club and the second meeting was held at Emily
Ramige's home, with committees named and affiliating with the county, district,
state and general federation, in 1944. In the 50 plus years that followed the
